Junior Champions' postponement

JUNIOR CHAMPIONS’ CUP UPDATE

THE UNFORTUNATE DECISION HAS BEEN MADE TO POSTPONE THIS WEEKENDS JUNIOR CHAMPIONS’ CUP

Due to the weather forecast for Schull Co. Cork this weekend, in the interest of safety for all those involved Irish Sailing in consultation with Met Eireann, the Race Officers, Safety Leader, and FMOEC Centre Managers have made the decision early Thursday to postpone the event.

Wind is forecast to be Southerly, for both Saturday & Sunday  and would be coming directly into the harbour.  There would be no sheltered area that might have been considered suitable. Launching and retrieving would have been very difficult, with the swell and the boats lying at anchor close to the shore.

While all of these sailors are no doubt excellent & competent, their skill set in a different boat, double handed, their strength and physical ability would have been severely challenged. There was a real risk of broken gear and possibly injury.

FMOEC have said

“Our sole focus is the safety of all participants & staff for the event; with this in mind we have been keeping a very close eye on the weather that is forecast for the weekend. The Southerly’s predicted by multiple forecasts are due to be strong and will leave us exposed to high winds & swell. (In excess of 20 knots)

We are aware that some competitors may not be familiar with the boats being used for the event i.e., TR 3.6’s. We are very conscious of the added risk with all these variables in play for the competitors. We strive to maintain the excellentsafety standards and reputation in which the event is held. Wesupport the decision that has been made by the organisers to cancel this weekend’s event and thank you for your understanding.”

WEEKEND FORECAST:

Saturday: South force 6 or 7, possibly reaching gale force 8.

Sea Area Forecast and Marine Warnings will be updated today at 12pm.
