Ewan competes in the ILCA 7 class. A member of Howth Yacht Club, McMahon has represented Ireland at both youth and senior international level and is regarded as one of the country’s leading single-handed dinghy sailors.
McMahon began sailing in Howth as a child and developed through Ireland’s youth performance pathway before progressing to senior international competition. He studied Energy Systems Engineering at UCD, balancing elite sport with academics while campaigning for Olympic qualification.
In recent years, he has competed on the international ILCA 7 circuit, challenging for Ireland’s Olympic berth alongside Olympian Finn Lynch during the Paris 2024 qualification cycle.
McMahon is older brother to Eve McMahon, is an Olympian and multiple youth world champion, while Ewan himself has represented Ireland extensively at European and World Championship events.
By 2025, McMahon had broken into the top 20 at senior World Championship level and was awarded an LA 2028 Olympic Scholarship by the Olympic Federation of Ireland, recognising his potential for the next Olympic cycle.
