Thinking About Your Next Step?

Instructor FAQ

Most base Instructorships are 4-5 days. This is typically done over the course of a week, but may be spread across two-parts, provided the duration of contact time does not exceed 2-weeks.

Full attendance is required for Instructorship.

Irish Sailing, as the National Governing Body for sailing, powerboating and windsurfing, is responsible for accrediting the national standards of instructorship. Each Instructor Award is also aligned with Sport Ireland’s national coaching framework and is dual-recognised as a coaching qualification. In addition, instructorship is placed on Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications as a Level 6 minor award, ensuring that it carries national recognition for adult learners.

A valid Instructorship is a measure of national standards in safety and quality tuition. If your award has lapsed, please contact the Irish Sailing Training Department (training@sailing.ie). Depending on how long it has been expired, you may be asked to show evidence that your skills are current — this could include a logbook, a Pre-Entry assessment or attending a CPD workshop as identified by Irish Sailing.

Yes. Training Centres may employ non-Irish Sailing Instructors in their programmes, provided that they are under the supervision of an Irish Sailing Senior Instructor and notify the Training Department.
This Instructor may apply to convert their base-Instructorship to Irish Sailing, typically via a Revalidation Workship where the Irish Sailing Instructor Trainer will assess their skills. Contact the Training Department for guidance.

Your initial base qualification is valid for 3-years. After completing a CPD Workshop or endorsement (eg. Advanced) your Instructorship is valid for 5-years.

All Instructor Courses are scheduled and hosted by an accredited Training Centre, approved to deliver the particular Scheme.

Host Training Centres set their course fees directly.

The outcome of every Instructor Course is Pass, Fail or Defer.
A Defer means the Instructor Trainer has identified that you have not yet met all the requirements for a pass, but that you are close and can achieve it with further development. The Trainer will provide a clear action plan outlining what you need to do — this could involve building confidence in delivery, gaining more experience or completing missing paperwork such as a valid first-aid certificate. A defer remains valid for 6 months, during which you can complete the required steps to reach a pass.
It is the responsibility of each Instructor to follow-up and address any outstanding deferral outcomes.
