World champions Eve McMahon and Rocco Wright head to Laser Youth World Championships
Fresh from their recent double gold medal at the 2022 World Sailing Youth World Championships in the Netherlands earlier this month, Eve McMahon and Rocco Wright, along with the Irish Sailing Academy start competing at the ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) Youth World Championships in Texas on Monday 25th July 2022.
In July Eve McMahon and Rocco Wright, both from Howth Yacht Club, each won the gold medal in the ILCA6 (formerly Laser Radial) classes at the 2022 World Sailing Youth World Championships in the Netherlands. This followed hot on the heels of Eve’s gold medal at the Laser Radial European Youth Championships in Greece earlier in the month.
The Irish Sailing Academy (Sophie Kilmartin, Rocco Wright, Fiachra McDonnell, Luke Turvey and Oisin Hughes) is coached by former Irish Sailing Performance athlete, Liam Glynn.
Sean Evans, Irish Sailing Olympic Development coach said “Apart from Eve and Rocco, this is the first world championships for the Academy. They’ve worked tirelessly over the winter with Academy coach Milan Vujasinovic with some recent positive results at the European Championships. We’re very excited to see how the team will fare against the world’s best in the ILCA 6 youth fleet in Texas”.
In Texas, the Irish team will face a wide field of 212 sailors from 35 countries. The regatta is held over a week from Monday 25 July to Saturday 30th July. There are two races scheduled per day, each lasting approximately 50 minutes. Hosting the event is the Houston Yacht Club, based in Shoreacres, Texas, USA and the International Laser Class Association (ILCA).
