Cruising Conference With a Difference

Cruising Conference With a Difference

€1200 Raised for RNLI

This year's Irish Sailing Cruising Conference brought the attendees out and about to see behind the scenes of experts and sailors all from the comfort of their sofas on zoom. Registration fees were flexible and we raised €1200 with 99 registered participants, many choosing to pay more and watch as a family.

We took our cameras to visit Pat Lawless as he prepares his Saltram Saga 36 for the 2023 Golden Globe Race, where Pat explained his mast reinforcement plans, showed us some of the equipment he has managed to obtain for the GGR strict criteria - including thermal paper fax machines and Knotmaster logs.

We took a trip to Kilrush Marina and Boatyard to meet craftsman and boatbuilder, Stephen Morris and the Dublin Bay 21s under reconstruction, where we talked about the idea of an apprenticeship program for nautical skills. Then we took a skip over the yard to admire the Rival 41, Waxwing, and chat with Peter Lawless as he prepares to leave on a solo round the world in August of this year.

While in Cork we joined Roger Betts in Union Chandlery's rigging room and chatted over the history of Union and maintenance tips for your rigging. Then up the hill to UK McWilliam, where we joined Barry Hayes and Cleo Watkin on the sail loft floor.

The best tips from both Roger and Cleo is MAINTENANCE - keep up with your year service and keep it clean will keep the big fixes to a minimum and keep you sailing longer.

Two young sailors that sailed a little longer than most sailors of their age are Ruairi (age 11) and Lilian (age 13). We joined them by zoom from their home in Galway and chatted over their amazing adventure circumnavigating the Atlantic on sv DANU, walking in the desert and meeting different cultures on their travels.

Sponsorship from Union Chandlery and support from Kilrush Marina and CAI made the filming all possible. One lucky attendee won a Seago lifejacket from Union Chandlery worth €220, three of the ICC Cruising Guides were won and a weekend in the Kilrush Marina Pods. It was a great night of entertainment and super to bring everyone together again.

Each interview is now available on our YouTube Channel in the Cruising playlist here - make a cuppa, sit back and enjoy seeing behind the scenes.
