Kinsale College Students Go Back for their Finals

Students from Kinsale College are being given the opportunity to finalise their college course. Kinsale College provides a Level 5 Outdoor Adventure Education Course and a Level 6 Outdoor Leadership PLC course which are the gateway to careers in the outdoor and adventure sector or a stepping stone to a college course.

The final exams for these courses are instructor training tests completed outdoors. While the lockdown meant that the college moved to blended learning in April and May, the final exams could not be completed via video or online. The lack of practical assessment meant that the students couldn’t finish the year.

The pressure was on, as some of the students needed their Level 6 qualification to enter their college course. And Kinsale College moved quickly, adapting their new term schedules to accommodate the May training into September to make sure that the final assessments of windsurfing, sailing and powerboat instructor were run in time.

It’s a big deal for a student to finish their college training, whether they are moving on to another course or not. As Jeff Cochrane, Outdoor Education Leadership Coordinator at Kinsale College told us, “Getting back together with the peer group that had formed the previous two years of training on and off the water, up hills and down creeks, helped the students close one chapter and move on to another.”

Courses like the ones run by Kinsale College are vital to ensure that students gain experience within the outdoor adventure industry. For example, the students got to finalise their Windsurfing Instructor qualification at the Jamie Knox Windsurfing Centre in the Maharees recently, exposing them to how a successful centre is run.

As well as finishing off the assessments, Kinsale College are now welcoming in new first years. With a summer of increased activity on the water, they expect to see their course numbers grow – a trend also being seen by Dave Garvey, Irish Sailing Training Development Officer: “With everyone holidaying at home this year and travel looking uncertain for next year there has been a really positive increase in the level of windsurfing and sailing activity around the country. Courses like the Kinsale College programme along with similar ETB (Education & Training Board) courses around the country play an important role in providing high quality instructors for Irish Sailing Training Centres so it is great to see them up and running again”.
