“SUMMER PROVISION” SCHEME Brings a New Sailor to Bray Sailing Club

New Adventures for Hansa 303 Sailor Cian

With continuing Covid-19 restrictions, Bray Sailing Club’s (BSC) “Inclusion in Sport” programme for the 2020 summer season had to be put largely on hold. BSC’s inclusion programme has grown massively since it began with a partnership with Lakers (a local club for children and adults with intellectual disabilities) in 2017. However, while most activities are unable to be run safely under current guidelines, BSC were delighted to welcome a new sailor to the club as part of the Department of Education’s Summer Provision scheme. This programme provides funding for children to continue or re-engage with learning, either at school or at home under the supervision of a qualified teacher.

The scheme gave sailor Cian Nolan the opportunity to come to BSC build further on his sailing skills, which last year saw him pick up the “Best Newcomer” award at the President’s Cup awards. With the very generous help of Ian French and the team in Sailability in Dun Laoghaire, a Hansa 303 was loaned to Cian which enabled him to take part in the programme.

Under the careful watch of his Instructor, Seán Hayes (who is also a post primary teacher), Cian clocked up forty hours on the water during the month of July.  Working within the “pod” guidelines set out by Irish Sailing, Cian and Seán were able to sail together in the two man Hansa 303. Over the course of the month, Cian built on his previous skills by learning some new manoeuvres (such as how to pick up a man over board and how to come alongside a pontoon), carried out some race practice with other junior sailors in BSC, and ended his month on the water by undertaking a two-day round trip around Bray Head to Greystones at the helm of the Hansa.

The programme proved to be an overwhelming success with both Cian and Seán enjoying their time together immensely. Cian is now looking forward to continue sailing with BSC as a member for the remainder of the summer season and the club also hopes to welcome him back for the 2021 season.
