Personal Safety Before Going Afloat – CHECKLIST

  • Always get the weather forecast and tide information for your area and know the local hazards
  • Ensure your craft and all necessary equipment are in good seaworthy condition
  • Always wear a suitable Personal Floatation Device (Lifejacket) and appropriate clothing
  • Only go out in conditions that are well within your ability and experience
  • Never go out alone, a buddy can assist you or call for assistance if needed
  • Ensure you have an appropriate means of communication (VHF, PLB, Phone in waterproof case)
  • Leave details of your trip with a responsible person ashore
  • If you or someone else afloat needs assistance ALWAYS call the Coast Guard (112 / 999, VHF Ch 16)
