Irish Sailing Pilot Umpire Webinar with a Record Number of Participants
Irish Sailing piloted the first-ever Umpire Webinar last Saturday (2 May) welcoming 39 attendees from all over Ireland as part of their ‘lockdown learning’ programme of events.
Delivered by international umpires Cxema Pico and Chris Lindsay, the interactive initiative made best use of video conferencing with short films, polls and the opportunity to ask questions throughout.
Participants learnt about the role, skills and process of umpiring before undertaking a rules quiz via a poll. After a short break, the webinar reconvened with a look at dialogue between umpires, course positioning, likely scenarios faced and signalling. The tutors were able to share screen videos from international events and showcase how scenarios have played out in real life. The chat function allowed great interaction from attendees and some interesting questions and discussions followed.
Whilst the Umpire Course would usually be held in conjunction with a regional event to obtain on-water experience, the webinar has allowed more people to participate from the comfort of their own living room. The course was delivered for a very affordable €1 and with no travel costs or journey time made it more accessible to all. Indeed, the webinar welcomed an even spread of participants from Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster.
Participants can now avail of the shared resources before gaining umpiring experience at local and regional team racing events.
