GP14 Worlds Postponed to 2021

2020 GP14 World Championships are Postponed ...

...to a new Provisional Date July 2021

In response to the global Coronavirus outbreak the GP14 International Class Association in conjunction with Skerries Sailing Club have unfortunately had to announce the POSTPONEMENT of the 2020 GP14 World Championships due to take place later in  July this year. With over 100 entries already registered, this is an unfortunate situation but one the organisers believe was inevitable once Health and Government authorities indicated that travel restrictions and other measures would remain in place through May.

Skerries Sailing Club and the GP14 International Association have been in discussion for quite some time preparing for this eventuality and in announcing the postponement have provisionally penciled in new date for the GP14 World Championships  in Skerries Sailing Club - July 25 to Aug 1 2021

Ferry Options for postponed Skerries World Championship - The three main ferry companies operating from Mainland UK to Ireland have all posted up their policies regarding refunds for cancelled bookings due to Covid-19 restrictions. If you have already purchased a ferry crossing,  then it is strongly recommended that you contact your ferry provider soon for specific guidance regarding the options you have for refunds or carrying the booking forwards as a credit for the rearranged World Championship in 2021.

GP14 Ireland and GP14 UK are providing full support and advice with refunds for ferries, entry, training and accommodation.

The GP14 Ireland and GP14 International Class  Associations greatly appreciate the efforts of all those who have been working and preparing for our event in July 2020 and particularly those in Skerries Sailing Club and Irish Sailing as well as all our sponsors and volunteers. Preparations are now underway for Skerries in 2021 while locally we are in ongoing discussions with representatives of the Class and Clubs in relation to the remainder of the season.

The International GP14 Class President, Curly Morris, shared a message with the GP14 sailors

"When I took on the job of President nine months ago I had not anticipated my medical background might be of any use other than for the odd minor injury. Covid 19 has turned all that on it’s head and while (happily) I’m not at the forefront of all the emergency work being done, chatting to colleagues and taking in all the available information, does give a little more insight than a lay person.

I suspect that even when the current “lockdown’” is ended we will continue to have a variety of social distancing measures and disincentives to gather in large groups for some time to come.

I am hopeful that local (Club) sailing will be possible later in the year, but if nonessential travel continues to be banned towing our boats to Clubs across the country will be hard to justify. If we find it possible to run an event in the autumn we have plans to do so.

Finally I hope you all stay well and safe during this difficult time. I look forward to when we can all sail and meet again in the fellowship of our great Class." Curly, President, GP14 International Class Association
