Irish Sailing Training Notice 20.1

Vetting and Safeguarding requirements for instructors and coaches with non-Irish Sailing qualifications

Under the provisions of the Children’s First Act 2015 anyone working directly with children on a regular basis must be Garda Vetting cleared and attend a Safeguarding 1 Course. It is the duty of the employer or recruiting officer to ensure they meet the legal requirement.

In line with Sport Ireland’s Safeguarding Guidance for Children and Young People in Sport , Garda Vetting and Sport Ireland Safeguarding 1 attendance is a certification requirement for all Irish Sailing Instructors and Coaches. Having sight of a valid Irish Sailing Instructor or Coach certificate satisfies this responsibility.

If you are employing or using volunteer instructors or coaches with non-Irish Sailing qualifications they may not have Garda Vetting and Safeguarding 1. Vetting or Safeguarding from other jurisdictions does not meet the requirements of the legislation.

When employing or using volunteer instructors or coaches with non-Irish Sailing qualifications it is the responsibility of the employer (Club / Training Centre) or recruiting officer to ensure that the legal requirements are satisfied and in line with Sport Ireland’s Safeguarding Guidance for Children and Young People in Sport . The process for meeting these requirements should be outlined in your recruitment and safeguarding policies.
