49ers compete to secure Ireland’s spot at the Olympics

The Irish Sailing Men’s 49er teams are in Auckland, New Zealand and begin competing on Tuesday 3 December at the 49er World Championships for a chance to qualify Ireland for a spot at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. The teams will likely need to secure a top 8 position to secure Ireland’s place.

Competing for Ireland will be two teams: Ryan Seaton and Seafra Guilfoyle, and Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove.

Ryan Seaton is a two-time Olympic veteran from Belfast who is teamed with Cork's Seafra Guilfoyle. This summer Ryan and Seafra finished as medal race finalists in the Enoshima Olympic Test Event in August, and in 10th position overall. Enoshima is the venue for the sailing at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove are from Howth. Fresh from winning the Volvo Irish Sailor of the Year, they took bronze at the U23 49er World Championships in Risor, Norway in July.

We’ll be posting daily on the 49er World Championship on our social media channels here:
