Try Sailing on the Lee at Seafest Cork 2019
The streets and quays were packed with people coming to join in the celebration of the sea this week and with the support Marine Institute Irish Sailing worked with local clubs and centres to provide Try Sailing opportunities up the River Lee for festival visitors.
The gallery pictures and some great quotes say it all ...
"I have just fulfilled a lifelong dream .... thank you so much."
"Well, we didn't sink!" and a BIG grin
"Can I come back tomorrow?"
"Where can I go to do it again?"
The hugs, handshakes and heartfelt thanks, made all the hard work worthwhile.
Royal Cork Yacht Club provided the event with 3 of the fantastic 1720 keelboats and 4 experienced sailors to skipper the tricky confined space with novice crew aboard and an audience of thousands on the quaysides ... "no pressure guys!!".
Blackrock Sailing Club came up trumps with excellent safety boat cover to be on hand for the sailors and Sail Cork were at hand as part of the event on the water safety. It was great to have Kinsale OEC 'Young Mariners' with us on Friday to lend a hand fitting buoyancy aids and crew the safety boats. While Jack Hickey from Cove Sailing Club brought his lovely ketch, the Anna Emily, along and invited Try Sailors to step on board for an introduction to life at sea on a sailing yacht.
All the sailors any many more visitors enjoyed the Try Sailing Try Knotting Challenge and a few of the more experienced sailors took the challenge blind fold.
It is the support of these clubs and centres that makes events like this possible.
