Comhghairdeas Coláiste Éidne Galway who for the second year in a row won the Connacht School’s Team Racing Championship last Sunday in An Cheathrú Rua hosted by Cumann Bádóireachta agus Seoltóireachta. Six teams from around Connacht were able to make the event despite the postponement of racing to Sunday due to westerly gale force winds hammering the bay on Saturday. The Schools included St Endas College, Athlone Community Marist College Athlone, Calasanctius Oranmore and host school Scoil Cuimsitheach Chiaráin Carraroe.
The event kicked off with a lovely breakfast provided by the school showing the Céad Mile Failte go Conamara was alive and well, followed by the Briefing from Ciaran Jordan of NUI Galway and his team who organised an excellent day of racing for everyone with some 90 degree shifts keeping the mark layers and competitors on their toes. Every team got to race each other and it was great to have a full fleet of fireflies owned by the school available for everyone to enjoy and ensured all the boats were equal to race.
St. Endas were delighted to come away with the win and were up against a couple of strong teams in Athlone Community College and Carraroe. The first race of the two races in the final is what tactical team racing is all about with the lead changing almost after every tack and it was really good to watch for all the supporters on the shore who came to watch. Credit to all the sailors and their parents for support.
A lovely moment of good sportsmanship was captured when both Captains shook hands after the final race displaying the respect and appreciation these sailors have – Fair Play a Diaibh !
The top three teams ...
