Marine Education Programme

Ireland's Youth Discover, Explore, Experience our Ocean's Wealth

Throughout June primary schools around Ireland have been enjoying sailing the salty seas while learning about what is living in, on and around our wonderful marine environment.

Irish Sailing’s Cara na Mara Programme has teamed up with the Marine Institute’s Explorers Programme to look at the synergies we have in sharing our Oceans Wealth and utilising our strengths to offer a dynamic interactive learning experience in Science, Biology, Maths, Geography and equally enjoy our sport of sailing as part of the day. Clubs involved with delivery in the programme were:

  • Galway City Sailing Club with Joss Myers offering a mix of Ocean Literacy / Biodiversity and Beach Cleanup then sailing Topaz in Galway Bay.
  • QUEST in Howth Yacht Club with Sarah Robertson integrated her Hands on Learning in S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering Maths) and how it is everywhere in sailing and then each child got to sail on the J80 club sailing fleet.
  • Rathmullan Sailing Club with Aengus Kennedy ran flora and fauna in their habitats along the beautiful beach and used their fleet of Bahias to go on trips exploring the beautiful coastline.
  • Foynes Yacht Club with Elaine O’ Mahony looked at integrating the environmental awareness and marine literature and history while sailing the Club boats in the Maritime village of Foynes.

It is hoped that many of the students who trialled the Explorers element will come back over the summer to start their Cara na Mara Junior Courses in the Club and continue their learning and sailing pathway. These four Clubs will conclude with a full report on the learning outcomes, recommendations for future programmes and form part of the new educational programme in preparation for 2019.

In addition, the Volvo Ocean Race Sustainability Education programme with Irish Sailing Hero Lucy Hunt  shared around the worldcontinues to be available on
