Commodore Garrett Leech was telling us how the idea came about, "Parents of young sailors often wonder what their precious will sail post Optimist and Topper introductions and Lough Ree Yacht Club have always been lucky enohg to have the Mirror as an established fleet for junior sailors of all abilities to move on as crew or helm.  As the numbers of Mirrors dwindled and more sailors were gravitating to single handed sailing, Lough Ree saught to preserve the double handed fleet with continued support of Mirror winter coaching and inviting Feva and 420 sailing to the club. To ensure their young sailors become good all rounders, most children are exposed to doubl-handed boats, even if they are a champion Optimist sailor. Double handed sailing is a more inclusive choice too, as different abilities and levels of confidence are accommodated."

"The ultimate aim is ensuring that they continue to sail after 14 years." says Garrett.

So the "Double Ree" was born ...

  • to encourage more youth to give double-handed sailing a go,
  • to highlight the thrill, joy and of course competiion, of double-handed sailing and
  • to get everyone together to celebrate themselves!!!

As a continuation of their passion for sailing together and for creating sailing environments for all skills within the club, Garrett is bringing back the Lough Ree Yacht Club Cruise in Company ... not just for cruising yachts and motor yachts, but for the dinghy sailors too. Shannon One Designs, Mirrors,  Mirrors, 420s, Picos Lasers and Optimists will be packing up their Kelly Kettles and heading off for a weekend of gentle sailing and socialising on an island in the lake at the end of July. Sounds fantastic. Can I come?
