Mayo Mayhem Powered by RWE returned to the Mayo coast for another weekend of international competition, with riders travelling from Ireland and across Europe for one of the event’s biggest editions yet. After a week of uncertainty over whether conditions would materialise, the Atlantic delivered and racing took place across Elly Beach and Cross Beach, with strong winds, large waves and challenging conditions testing riders across the fleets.
The weekend began with early arrivals getting on the water at Elly Beach and Cross Beach on Thursday, before Friday brought some sunshine, wind and waves at Cross Beach, with almost 20 heats completed. Saturday delivered the standout conditions and riders on 3.4-3.7m sails. The high standard of wave riding and jumping continued throughout the day.
The event also introduced a new Under-18 fleet for the first time, with Mateusz Lotocki, Oscar Roe, Sam Comey and Joshua Roberts taking on some of the biggest conditions many of them had experienced. Racing was eventually stopped by the safety team as conditions became too extreme, with Joshua Roberts taking the inaugural U18 title. In the Amateur fleet, Mark Henderson took the title after a closely fought final against Pawel Jankowski. Cathal Clarke finished third, with Clément Créach fourth.
The Women’s title went to Ireland’s Amy O’Donnell, ahead of Taina Postec, Maïwenn Deffontaines and Aoife Cooke. The Pro final saw Baptiste Cloarec, Lucas Meldrum, Nicolas Quéméner and Julius Byrne battle it out in demanding conditions. Cloarec secured the title with a combination of strong wave riding and big moves, including a push loop that earned 8.5 from the judges in the closing stages.
