CREATING THE FUTURE OF PARA SAILING IN IRELAND

Paralympics Ireland this week launched its new strategy, Live Limitless, setting out a vision for a more inclusive future for disability sport in Ireland. The strategy focuses on creating opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport at every level, from grassroots through to high performance. Speaking at the launch, Minister for Sport Charlie McConalogue highlighted the importance of ensuring that sport is accessible to everyone and recognised the role clubs, coaches and volunteers play in communities across Ireland. The message closely aligns with Irish Sailing’s work to make the sport more accessible and develop meaningful participation pathways for sailors with disabilities.

The launch also comes at an important time for para sailing internationally. World Sailing has submitted a bid to have sailing reinstated on the Paralympic programme for Brisbane 2032. If successful, this would provide further impetus to develop a strong and sustainable para sailing pathway in Ireland, including opportunities for sailors to learn, train and compete in a dedicated racing environment.

One sailor already demonstrating the potential within Irish para sailing is Patrick Hassett, Ireland’s 2.4mR sailor. Based in Dún Laoghaire, Patrick trains regularly on the water and competes on the European circuit. At a recent event in Czechia, he secured two race wins and finished fourth overall. His season continues this week in Plau am See, Germany, before concluding at the Antwerp City Cup in Belgium from 23-25 October. Patrick’s progress demonstrates what can be achieved when sailors have access to the right opportunities, support and competitive pathway. His campaign also provides an example for other sailors who may be considering competitive sailing.

With Live Limitless placing a strong focus on creating pathways from grassroots participation through to high performance, there is a clear opportunity to continue developing para sailing in Ireland. Irish Sailing will continue to work towards creating more opportunities for sailors with disabilities, whether that means getting on the water for the first time, developing skills and confidence, or progressing towards international competition.
