STRENGTH IN UNITY: WHAT IT MEANS FOR IRISH CLUBS

The recent National Diversity and Inclusion Conference in Dublin brought together people from across government, healthcare, sport, industry, and community organisations to discuss how we can build a more inclusive nation. Representatives from organisations including the Department of Public Expenditure, St Vincent's Hospital, Bord na Móna, the NTMA, Open Doors, the African Professional Network of Ireland, Sport Ireland and the Construction Industry Federation shared their experiences and perspectives on creating environments where everyone feels that they belong.

While discussions focused mostly on workplaces and wider society, many of the themes felt particularly relevant for sports clubs. The conference theme was Strength in Unity, which highlighted the idea that diversity, equality, and inclusion are not separate initiatives or projects and should be part of the culture of an organisation.

For Irish Sailing Clubs and Training Centres, this is important. Inclusion is about more than mere access, it is about creating an environment within clubs where people feel comfortable being themselves and that they belong there. Importantly, inclusion doesn't need to start with large-scale programmes, it can begin with listening to members, seeking feedback, making small practical changes and ensuring that everyone feels represented and valued.
