GAINING CERTIFICATION FOR BOATING ABROAD

Following a busy summer on the water, many sailors and powerboaters may be looking to build on their experience, undertake further training or gain certification for boating abroad. The International Certificate of Competence for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is issued by Irish Sailing on behalf of the Irish Government and provides evidence of competence for recreational boaters operating in countries where an ICC is required or accepted.

A reminder that Irish Sailing can only issue an ICC on the basis of an appropriate Irish Sailing practical certificate. We have seen an increase in enquiries from boaters looking to obtain an Irish ICC based on certificates from other organisations, such as the RYA. However, external qualifications cannot be used as the basis for issuing an Irish ICC.

If an ICC is part of your future boating plans, now is a good time to check the certification required and consider any training you may need over the autumn and winter.
