Irish Sailing is proud to support clubs across the country in improving accessibility through Sport Ireland funding. Recent Disability Capital Funding (DAF) has enabled Howth Yacht Club, the National Yacht Club, Dún Laoghaire, and the Royal Cork Yacht Club to progress plans to install hoists at their clubs, helping to remove barriers and create more inclusive environments for sailors with disabilities.
The value of accessible infrastructure was clearly demonstrated at this year's Watersports Inclusion Games, where a hoist was available to support participants getting on and off the water. The demand for its use was significant, and many participants would not have been able to take part without it. It was a simple but powerful reminder of how accessibility measures can make a real difference to participation.
Accessible facilities are a key part of ensuring people not only have the opportunity to participate but also feel that they belong within our clubs and communities.
The process of installing a hoist is simpler than many clubs might think. The best way to begin is by:
- Identify the need within your club and engage with potential users.
- Explore hoist options and suitable installation locations.
- Apply for available accessibility or capital funding opportunities.
- Work with suppliers and accessibility experts to plan installation.
- Promote your club and encourage new participants to get involved.
A hoist is more than just equipment. It helps ensure that more people can access the water, enjoy the benefits of sailing, and become active members of their local club. We hope there will be further capital funding opportunities available next year, enabling more clubs to invest in accessibility projects and make their facilities more welcoming and inclusive for everyone. By removing barriers and providing practical supports such as hoists, clubs can ensure that more people have the opportunity to participate, feel a sense of belonging, and enjoy all that sailing has to offer.
