CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF THE A.K. ILEN

Irish Sailing would like to congratulate Sailing Into Wellness as they celebrate the 100th anniversary of the A.K. Ilen, one of Ireland's most remarkable maritime treasures.

Built in Baltimore, West Cork, in 1926, the Ilen has enjoyed an extraordinary journey. From carrying people, goods and livestock around the Falkland Islands for decades to returning home to Ireland and undergoing an extensive restoration, she has become a powerful symbol of our maritime heritage and the skill of generations of traditional boatbuilders.

Today, the Ilen continues to make a difference in a very different way. As the flagship vessel of Sailing Into Wellness, she provides unique sailing experiences that support wellbeing, personal development and social inclusion for people from communities across Ireland. Through overnight voyages and day sails, participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, develop friendships and experience the therapeutic benefits of being on the water.

Irish Sailing is proud to support the work of Sailing Into Wellness through funding programmes that help make sailing more accessible and inclusive. The impact of their work is evident in the lives they touch and in the opportunities they create for so many people each year.

As the A.K. Ilen marks her centenary, we celebrate not only a century of sailing history but also her ongoing contribution to Irish communities. We wish the crew, volunteers and participants of Sailing Into Wellness every success as they mark this special milestone and many more happy years on the water ahead.
