Good powerboating requires conscious skill and control during all manouvers of the vessel, from coming alongside, to moving within confined spaces. Most importantly, slow boat speed handling while picking up a mooring and approaching a person in the water is when managing a vessel in all types of wind and tides matters most.
As the busy summer season begins to wind down, now is a good time to review where your skills are at. A certificate is only as valuable as the skills behind it, so if you haven't spent much time practising since your powerboat course, refreshing your skills would be a good next step.
For the many volunteers who drive powerboats as part of club activity, keeping these skills sharp is particularly important. If you're already confident in your boat handling, it could be time to develop your skills further. The Safety Boat Certificate develops skills in towing, recovery, search techniques and rescue response, while the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate develops the skills needed for longer day trips, including passage planning and berthing practices.
