CHRIS LINDSAY TO BE CHIEF UMPIRE LA28

Chris Lindsay Appointed Chief Umpire for LA28 Olympic Sailing

Belfast Lough’s Chris Lindsay has been appointed Chief Umpire for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Sailing Competition, continuing his involvement at the highest level of international sailing.

World Sailing has confirmed Lindsay as one of the lead Race Officials for LA28. In his role as Chief Umpire, he will oversee the umpiring team responsible for ensuring racing is conducted fairly and in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing.

The appointment continues a distinguished Olympic career for the Irish official. Lindsay served as an International Judge and Umpire at the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition and was also involved at Tokyo 2020, where he was among the first officials appointed to a digital International Technical Official role at an Olympic Games.

He is currently Chair of World Sailing’s International Umpires Sub-Committee.

Lindsay joins an experienced senior officiating team for LA28. Spain’s Ana Sanchez Del Campo, who chaired the International Jury at Paris 2024, will continue in the role, while France’s Corinne Aubert has been appointed Principal Race Officer.

Britain’s Bas Edmonds and Greece’s Dimitris Dimou will chair the Technical Committees at the Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles venues respectively.

The Chief Umpire role will be particularly important at LA28, where the sailing competition will be held across two venues. Racing is scheduled to take place from 14–30 July 2028, with events staged off Belmont Shore in Long Beach and at the Port of Los Angeles.

World Sailing President Quanhai Li said the officials brought “extensive Olympic experience” across race management, umpiring, jury leadership and technical inspection.

“We are confident their collective expertise will ensure World Sailing delivers an exceptional regatta in close partnership with LA28 and the IOC,” he said.

World Sailing CEO David Graham said the officials would lead the organisation’s event management team for the Games, following the appointment of two Technical Delegates earlier this year.

The remaining Technical Official positions, including Vice-Chair roles, will be announced in due course.

Lindsay was the only Irish official among the International Judges and Umpires selected for the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition.

His latest appointment will see him take on even greater responsibility at LA28, leading the umpiring operation at sailing’s biggest international event.
