SILVER FOR SIENNA WRIGHT AT ILCA 6 YOUTH WORLDS

Silver for Ireland’s Sienna Wright at ILCA 6 Youth World Championships

Irish sailor Sienna Wright has won the silver medal at the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, following an impressive week in which she recorded four race wins.

The Howth Yacht Club sailor established herself among the leaders early in the championship and remained in contention throughout a closely fought series held in challenging and frequently shifting conditions.

Wright and Greece’s Hermione Ghicas gradually pulled clear of the rest of the fleet, turning the championship into a two-sailor contest for gold. Ghicas ultimately claimed the world title while Wright secured the silver medal with a race to spare.

The result continues a strong Irish record at the championship. Wright’s fellow Howth Yacht Club sailor Eve McMahon, now a member of the Irish Sailing Senior Squad and a Senior World Championship Bronze medallist, won consecutive ILCA 6 Youth world titles in 2021 and 2022.

Abigail Murphy and Siún Ní Choistealbha also represented Ireland in the female fleet. Ní Choistealbha recorded a best race result of 8th while Murphy’s best finish was 16th.

In the male ILCA 6 championship, Malahide Yacht Club’s Conor Cronin made a promising start with first and second-place race finishes. He was unable to sustain that early position in such a highly competitive fleet and finished 49th overall.

Brazil’s Erik Scheidt won the male world title. Ireland was also represented by Marcus Shelley, Cormac Byrne, Rory Brennan Hobbs, Harry Dunne, Eolann Miles, Max O’Hare, Jack Ives, Eduardo Gasset and Joseph Robinson.

Wright will now prepare to step up to senior international competition at the ILCA 6 World Championships, taking place on Dublin Bay from 5–12 September. Racing on home waters will give the young sailor an opportunity to test herself against the world’s leading senior ILCA 6 athletes.
