Ireland’s young ILCA 4 sailors took on a major international challenge at the 2026 ILCA 4 Youth World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, which ran from 1–9 August. The Irish team joined 448 sailors from 51 nations for a demanding week of racing on Aarhus Bay, with strong winds, delays and changing conditions testing the fleet throughout the championship.
Amy Kieran was Ireland’s highest placed sailor, finishing 60th overall in the girls’ fleet after steadily moving up the leaderboard during the week. Kate Spain also made progress through the championship to finish 102nd, while Amy Shelley completed the regatta in 104th.
In the boys’ fleet, Jackson Clark was Ireland’s leading sailor, finishing 189th overall. Alex Butcher, John Kenny and James Crawford also competed, with Butcher making Ireland’s biggest climb through the championship.
The championship provided valuable international experience for the Irish sailors, competing against some of the strongest young ILCA sailors from around the world and gaining experience that will support their continued development through the Irish Sailing pathway. The ILCA 4 is an important step in the pathway towards the Olympic ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes, making international events such as the Youth World Championships an important opportunity for Ireland’s next generation of sailors.
