420 INTERNATIONAL CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP AT LOUGH DERG

Lough Derg Yacht Club hosted the 420 Class Championships from 7-9 August, welcoming 29 boats for three days of competitive racing. After two days of pre-event coaching, the fleet completed eight races in a range of conditions on Lough Derg, with visiting UK sailors adding a strong international challenge.

Laragh and Roisin Epstein of CBYC, sailing GBR 56943, took the overall title with four race wins and a remarkably consistent series, never finishing outside the top two in their seven counted results. Caoimhe Corkery and Riona Moriarty of Kinsale Yacht Club and Tralee Bay Sailing Club were the leading Irish team finishing second overall, while Daniel Copithorne and Matt Mapplebeck of Royal Cork Yacht Club completed the podium in third.

The Silver Fleet was won by Lough Derg Yacht Club’s Kate Kovtun and James Love, who also finished an impressive sixth overall. Freddie Nelson and Sam Smith of BLSC took the Bronze Fleet, finishing 14th overall. The championship provided a strong showcase for the 420 class and for Lough Derg Yacht Club, with the club’s volunteers, race committee, coaches and supporters helping deliver a successful event.
