The Pre-Entry Assessment is a practical skills assessment designed to confirm that candidates have the sailing ability and background knowledge required before progressing onto an Irish Sailing Instructor Course. It is an assessment, not a training day, so preparation should begin well in advance.
Key areas to focus on include:
Afloat Skills

Demonstrate consistent use of the Five Essentials throughout the day.

Practise rudderless sailing using sail trim and boat balance.

Refine precision manoeuvres including man overboard recovery, coming alongside, tight circles, anchoring and mooring.

Ensure discipline-specific skills are well practised, such as capsize recovery, reefing and headsail changes where applicable.
Background Knowledge

Be confident with weather forecasting, tides and chartwork.

Revise buoyage, collision regulations, compass work and ropework.

Know the required knots and be able to tie them quickly and correctly.

Review safety topics including distress signals and hypothermia.
