SKILL DELIVERY ON THE WATER FOR INSTRUCTORS

As the season continues, Irish Sailing encourages all instructors to reflect on how they deliver skills on the water. Effective instruction is about more than knowing the syllabus- it's about understanding how skills work, adapting to changing conditions and delivering teaching points that help every sailor progress.

Key reminders for instructors:

  • Understand the mechanics behind each skill before teaching it.
  • Break complex manoeuvres into simple, achievable steps.
  • Focus on the teaching point that will have the biggest impact.
  • Adapt your coaching to suit the age, experience and learning style of your sailors.
  • Adjust teaching points to match the day's weather and water conditions.
  • Observe carefully, identify the root cause of mistakes and tailor your feedback accordingly.
  • Deliver feedback at the right moment using clear, concise coaching points.
  • Continue developing your own skills through Revalidation Workshops, endorsements and peer learning.

Every group of sailors is different, and no two sessions are ever the same. By remaining adaptable, observant and learner-focused, instructors can create engaging sessions that build confidence, develop skills and deliver high-quality learning experiences every time they go afloat.
