Sailing clubs have long been at the heart of their local communities, and fundraising events provide a great opportunity to bring members together while supporting important causes.
The Pink Picnic Sail, organised by Lough Derg Yacht Club in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland on Sunday 30th August, is an excellent example of how a simple idea can encourage participation both on and off the water. Combining a relaxed sail with a picnic and social gathering, the event welcomes sailors of all ages and abilities while raising vital funds for charity.
Events like these do not need to be centred on racing: a club cruise, family sail, picnic afloat, paddle, barbecue or afternoon on the water can all become successful fundraising occasions that encourage members, families and the wider community to get involved. Alongside raising money for worthwhile causes, these events help strengthen club communities, introduce new people to sailing and create opportunities for members to spend time together in an informal setting.
