One of West Cork's most anticipated junior sailing events returns this summer as Glandore Harbour Yacht Club hosts the 25th anniversary of the Marconi Cup.
Established 25 years ago to bring sailing clubs across West Cork together, the Marconi Cup has become a highlight of the junior sailing calendar. The annual event welcomes sailors aged 18 and under from clubs west of Galley Head, with teams traditionally representing Glandore, Baltimore, Schull, Crookhaven and Bantry. The hosting duties rotate each year between the participating clubs.
The Marconi Cup is decided across two exciting disciplines. Clubs first compete in a relay race, with one boat from each club racing around a fixed course before the competition moves to a fast-paced team racing format, where teams compete head-to-head in a round robin series around a digital "N" course.
Each club can enter up to two teams, with more than 100 young sailors expected to compete this year. The event has earned legendary status among generations of West Cork sailors, combining fierce competition on the water with outstanding sportsmanship, friendship and fun ashore.
Irish Sailing congratulates Glandore Harbour Yacht Club and the dedicated volunteers from all participating clubs who continue to make the Marconi Cup such a special event. Reaching its 25th anniversary is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the strength of junior sailing and community spirit across West Cork. Here's to another 25 years of inspiring the next generation of sailors.
