The Fifth Edition of Double Ree will take place on the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July.
Lough Ree Yacht Club’s biennial festival for double-handed youth classes will host five classes this year. Mirror, Feva, 420 and 29er classes will be joined for the first time by the 49ers.
As an alternative to single-handed sailing, double-handed sailing can offer the challenge of learning new skills; rigging, managing multiple sails, coordinating with another sailor, along with the sociable aspect of sailing with a friend. Not every good sailor necessarily wants to helm. For those sailors, a double-handed boat is the perfect choice. Double-handers can be essential for keeping young people in sailing.
Ashore, the sailors and their families can enjoy Lough Ree Yacht Clubs’ relaxed camping facilities and lively social activities.
The date of the event has been specifically selected to make it as accessible as possible for sailors who have just finished their sailing course and may be trying a regional event for the first time. This year in addition to the camping, they have organised food trucks providing teas, coffees, burgers, crepes, ice-cream and more.
The barbecue will be available Friday for early arrivals to prepare their own food. Festival Food Trucks will be onsite and available during the weekend.
As mentioned, the 49ers will take part for the first time this year as part of the ‘9er’ class. They should provide a spectacular sight and inspiration for the younger sailors participating in the event.
