DAY ONE: 49ER EUROPEANS

Dickson & Waddilove Lead at European Championships

Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove lead the 49er European Championships after the opening day of racing, following a race win and a second-place finish.

As Ireland enjoys a summer heatwave, competitors in Eckernförde, Germany, were met with the opposite. Torrential rain, chilly temperatures and strong offshore winds combined to create shifty, gusty conditions that pushed crews to their limits from the opening race.

The difficult conditions did little to unsettle North County Dublin duo Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove, who opened their regatta with a race win before adding a second-place finish to top the overall standings after two qualification races.

Speaking after racing, Waddilove said: "It was tricky out there, so we just wanted to get off the line and go as fast as we could, and that seemed to work pretty well."

The breeze remained at the upper limit for racing throughout the day, with a number of crews capsizing as they battled the challenging conditions. Similar weather is forecast for tomorrow before easing later in the week.

Looking ahead to the second day of qualification racing, Dickson said: "The goal tomorrow is to keep this momentum going and put together another consistent set of results to make sure we qualify comfortably for Gold Fleet."

In the Women’s Skiff fleet, Erin McIlwaine (Royal St George YC / Newcastle Yacht Club) and Ellen Barbour (County Antrim Boat Club) endured a challenging opening day. They posted race finishes of 18th and 15th before a capsize in the final race resulted in a 20th-place finish. The pair end the day 39th overall.

Irish Sailing FX Coach Matt McGovern said: “The girls showed good pace today and put themselves in strong positions with some solid starts. However, our boat handling around the turning marks wasn’t quite where it needs to be and that cost us places as the fleet compressed. Overall, there’s still work to do, but we continue to identify areas for improvement. It’s a long regatta, and there’s plenty of racing still to come, so anything can happen.”

Development sailors Ben O'Shaughnessy (Royal Cork Yacht Club) and Ethan Spain (National Yacht Club) also faced a difficult opening day. A capsize in their first race left them 18th before they recovered well to finish 10th in race two. They end the day 39th overall, gaining valuable experience ahead of the Junior World Championships later this month in The Netherlands.

Although this championship does not count towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, it is one of the most significant events in the Olympic cycle. Many of the world's leading crews are competing, making it an important measure of form as campaigns gather momentum towards LA 2028.

Racing continues tomorrow with the second day of the Elimination Series before the fleet splits into Gold and Silver Fleets on Friday 10 July. The championship concludes with the Final Series, where the medals will be decided.
