WIORA REGATTA RULES THE WEST COAST

Ray & Michel McGibney on board their sigma 38 ‘Tommiray’, coming ashore on day 3 of the regatta.

With an excess of 40 boats competing, the four-day WIORA regatta drew to a close last Saturday evening in Fenit Co. Kerry.

The four-day event was book ended by strong winds which prevented the competitors going to sea on both the opening and closing days.

Irrespective, National Race Officer John Leech secured five solid races over the two remaining days to mark a memorable

50th anniversary of WIORA. Tralee Bay sailing club was host to the event and in doing so, supplied a magnificent back drop for the series. In addition to this, the atmosphere both on and off the water was relaxed and welcoming to the many visiting boats and crews who travelled to take part.

Tralee Bay Sailing club itself is also celebrating a special anniversary – seventy years since its foundation and is an example of a club that has gone from strength to strength thanks to the continual hard work of its many volunteer members.

Congratulations to WIORA and Tralee Bay SC and all the volunteer members for organising a wonderful regatta on the west coast of Ireland.
