DEVELOPING A CAREER ON THE WATER

Whether your interest lies in sailing, windsurfing, winging, or powerboating, the Irish Sailing instructor pathway provides opportunities to teach, develop, and advance within a nationally recognised system.

Becoming an instructor begins with building strong personal experience and completing the relevant progression stages within each discipline. From there, candidates can work towards instructor qualifications across Small Boat Sailing, National Powerboat Training, Go Windsurfing and Winging, Inland Waterways Motorboat Training, Personal Watercraft, and National Cruising. Each pathway includes clearly defined standards, practical competencies, and prerequisites designed to ensure instructors are confident, capable, and safe on the water.

For those starting out, entry-level instructor qualifications open the door to working with beginners and helping new participants experience their first time on the water. From there, instructors can progress into senior roles, specialist endorsements, and advanced instructional qualifications. Many also move into seasonal or full-time roles within Irish Sailing accredited training centres around the country.

Beyond instruction, further opportunities exist within race official development, safety boat training, and continuous professional development. This allows individuals to stay active within the sport while expanding their skillset and contributing to the wider sailing community.

All training courses and scheduled instructor programmes are available through Irish Sailing accredited centres nationwide, with further details accessible here.
