EUROPEAN BOATING ASSOCIATION GENERAL UPDATE

The European Boating Association European Boating Association is a European umbrella organisation that brings together national boating bodies to coordinate on shared issues affecting recreational boating.

At its most recent meeting in Sweden in April 2026, delegates from 18 countries gathered to review key financial and policy matters. The association confirmed stable finances and recorded a leadership change, with Laurent Kolly appointed as treasurer following the retirement of Leif Nielsen. The Irish representative is Simon Parker, who contributes to discussions on behalf of Ireland.

Discussions covered a broad range of topics affecting boating across Europe. Environmental pressures on rivers, lakes, and coastal waters were a central concern, alongside increasing regulatory requirements for recreational boat users. Delegates also addressed issues linked to navigation reliability, including electronic chart systems, as well as wastewater management and the balance between environmental protection and continued access to waterways.

Future energy options for boating were also discussed, including hydrogen and other alternative fuels. Safety and regulatory alignment across countries featured as well, particularly in relation to alcohol rules on board vessels.

The association continues to develop digital systems to improve communication and strengthen engagement with members. The Bulgarian Yachting Association was also admitted as a new member, reflecting ongoing growth within the organisation.

Looking ahead, meetings are scheduled for October 2026 in Hamburg Germany, spring 2027 in Denmark, and October 2027 in Basel Switzerland. The Netherlands is also being considered as a possible host for 2028.

Irish Sailing would like to thank Simon Parker for his ongoing work and commitment in representing Ireland within the association.
