Irish Sailing is encouraging Clubs, Training Centres and families across the country to introduce young people to the water through Cara na Mara, our junior discovery sailing programme designed specifically for children aged 6-9 years.
The first Cara na Mara courses will begin for the summer shortly, bringing a new generation of sailors on a journey of exploration, imagination and discovery. To celebrate the launch of this season's courses, Irish Sailing has some exciting surprises in store, including dedicated Centre Packs and Sailor Packs for participating Training Centres and young sailors.
Cara na Mara is more than just a sailing course: it's a story-led adventure where children discover boats, sea creatures, the marine environment and life on the water through games, storytelling and hands-on activities. Every session is designed to build confidence, curiosity and a sense of belonging in a safe and supportive environment.
For Clubs and Training Centres, Cara na Mara provides an exciting opportunity to welcome new families, introduce children to the sport at an early age and create positive first experiences that can lead to a lifelong involvement in sailing and watersports.
For parents, it offers a fun and engaging way for children to spend time outdoors, make new friends and develop confidence around the water. No previous sailing experience is required. The programme is designed to be accessible, enjoyable and suitable for complete beginners.
Clubs and Training Centres can now request a Cara na Mara licence through the Irish Sailing Passport (Checklick) platform. Licensed centres will receive access to the new Training Centre Handbook and Resource Pack, giving instructors everything they need to deliver the programme.
If your Club or Training Centre would like to run a Cara na Mara course this summer, now is the time to get involved. And if you're a parent looking for a fun and memorable activity for a young sailor, contact your local Irish Sailing Club or Training Centre to get your little one involved!
