The May bank holiday is here! As we head out on the water over the next few days to enjoy the sunshine (hopefully), it is important to remeber that a short safety check before going afloat can ensure your long weekend stays smooth sailing. A little preparation now means a better experience and more time on the water.
- Check your PFD
Nearly two-thirds of lifejackets checked by the RNLI last year were found to have developed faults. If you haven’t inspected and serviced your PFD yet this year, now is the time to do it.
- Check the weather. Check the tide.
Conditions on Irish waters can change quickly. Check Met Éireann and your local forecast before heading out, and understand how weather and tide may affect your plans.
- Get your engine checked
An engine that has been idle over winter needs attention before the season begins. Check your impeller, fuel, battery and kill cord. If in doubt, have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.
- Tell someone
Before you go afloat, let a responsible person ashore know where you’re going, who’s onboard and when you expect to return. If you’re overdue, they can raise the alarm. Always carry a suitable means of communication on the water.
Follow these four steps and have a safe and enjoyable long weekend on the water.
