RECORD BREAKING NUMBERS AT FASTNET SCHOOLS TEAM RACING

The success of this year’s Fastnet Schools Team Racing event in Schull was built on the incredible commitment and effort of a dedicated team of volunteers, whose work ensured a seamless and high-quality competition from start to finish.

With a record 24 teams competing, including international entries from Royal Hospital School and Ryde School, the scale of the event placed significant demands on race management, safety teams and shore support.

Despite losing the opening day to challenging weather conditions, volunteers delivered an outstanding weekend of racing. A remarkable 192 races were completed across Saturday and Sunday, with each team sailing 16 races under a single-change Swiss League format. This level of delivery is a testament to the experience, coordination and dedication of those involved.

Special recognition goes to Dave Harte, who led the on-water operations, supported by a highly effective race management and umpiring team who ensured fair, consistent and efficient racing throughout.

The impact of this work was clear in the quality of the competition. Schull Community College Sharks were dominant throughout, winning all 16 of their races to secure overall victory.

Final results were as follows:
1st- SCC Sharks
2nd- RHS Falcons
3rd- Ryde on Time

In the fleet divisions, St Andrew’s College claimed the Silver Fleet title, while Kilkenny College took top honours in the Bronze Fleet.

Events of this scale simply do not happen without volunteer support. From race officials and umpires to safety crews and those coordinating ashore, every contribution played a role in creating a positive, competitive and enjoyable experience for all sailors.

This event stands as a strong example of what can be achieved through volunteerism in sailing, and a sincere thank you goes to everyone involved for their time, effort and commitment.
