DAY ONE: TROFEO PRINCESA SOFIA

Lynch Leads Irish Challenge in Testing Palma Opener

The opening event of the Sailing Grand Slam series, the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofía, got underway today in the Bay of Palma, with the full Irish Sailing senior team in action.

The forecast for strong conditions failed to materialise, with light, unstable winds causing significant delays across all courses. Large shifts and inconsistent pressure made for a difficult and unpredictable start to the regatta.

The ILCA 7 (Men’s Dinghy) fleet sailed late into the evening, completing two of the scheduled three races in challenging conditions. Two-time Olympian and 2025 bronze medallist at this event, Finn Lynch (National Yacht Club) delivered a strong opening day, posting a sixth and a second to sit fifth overall in the 197-boat fleet.

Reflecting on the day, Lynch said:

“It was a long day in very unstable, shifty breeze, so it was about staying composed and making good decisions. These are the conditions where experience counts and you have to treat it as an opportunity to build consistency.”

The fleet spent close to nine hours on the water, with multiple postponements and abandoned races as the breeze remained unsettled.

Ewan McMahon (Howth Yacht Club) was unable to recover from a difficult start in the opening race, finishing mid-fleet, but responded well with a third-place finish in race two.

Fiachra McDonnell (Royal Irish Yacht Club) recorded a consistent day with finishes of 19th and 10th. A member of the Irish Sailing Development Squad, McDonnell continues to show strong progression as he transitions into senior competition.

Racing in the ILCA 6 class (Women’s Dinghy) was limited to one completed race. Eve McMahon (Howth Yacht Club) delivered a strong performance in the conditions to finish fifth after rounding the top mark in 12th, while Sienna Wright placed 13th. The second race was abandoned due to shifting winds.

In the 49er fleet (Men’s Dinghy), Olympians Robert Dickson (Howth Yacht Club) and Sean Waddilove (Skerries Sailing Club) recorded a best result of seventh but sit 67th overall after three races. Ben O’Shaughnessy (Royal Cork Yacht Club) and Ethan Spain (National Yacht Club) also found the conditions challenging, with a top finish of 15th.

In the 49erFX fleet (Women’s Dinghy), Erin McIlwaine (Royal St George YC / Newcastle YC) and Ellen Barbour (County Antrim Boat Club) lie 47th overall after three races as they begin their first full senior season. Coach Matt McGovern noted the challenging conditions provided a valuable learning opportunity, allowing the pair to identify key areas for improvement.

Qualification racing continues across the fleets tomorrow to determine progression into the Elimination Series, where sailors are split into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets based on overall standings. The 49er and 49erFX will complete three days of qualifying before this split is made whilst ILCA’s will complete two.

Following the Elimination Series, the top ten boats overall will advance to Saturday’s Final Series, where two races will decide the podium.
