FLEET SPOTLIGHT: 420

Next up on the Youth Nationals hall of fame is the 420 class…

Designed by Christian Maury in 1959, the 420 has become one of the most widely sailed double-handed dinghies in the world. Originally created as a trainer for larger performance boats, it quickly developed into a competitive international class of its own and is now recognised as a key step in the youth sailing pathway.

With its trapeze and spinnaker, the 420 introduces sailors to advanced boat handling, teamwork, and tactical racing. It rewards coordination and communication between helm and crew, while also demanding strong technical skills and race awareness.

The class has a long and successful history in Ireland, with strong club fleets and consistent representation at European and World Championships. There has been consistent training in the class throughout the winter and we can’t wait to see the 420 fleet in action at Ballyholme in just two weeks time!
