FLEET SPOTLIGHT: 29ER

Designed by Julian Bethwaite in the late 1990s, the 29er was developed as a youth stepping stone towards the Olympic 49er. As a smaller, lighter, and more accessible version of the 49er, it introduces sailors to skiff sailing, with asymmetric spinnakers, trapezing, and high-speed performance at an early stage.

A key part of this pathway is physical development. The 29er is ideally suited to lighter crews, allowing younger sailors to develop the strength, coordination, and technical skills required for skiff racing, making the 29er a crucial transition class in preparing athletes for the physical and tactical demands of Olympic-level competition. Since its introduction, the 29er has grown into a leading international youth class, with strong fleets across Europe and a well-established presence in Ireland. It has become a central part of the high-performance pathway, regularly featuring at major international events and championships.

Across the country, crews have spent the winter months training intensively in this fleet. For many, the 29er represents their first step into high-performance sailing, with the Youth Nationals marking an important milestone in their development. Supported by clubs nationwide and Irish Sailing, the class continues to play a vital role in progressing sailors towards elite competition.

We look forward to seeing the 29er fleet in action in Ballyholme this April!
