Following a review of the National Powerboat Training Scheme instructor requirements, the Coastal Navigation for Small Boats Certificate (CNSB) has been added as a mandatory pre-requisite for NPTS Instructor recognition, effective 1st September 2025.
This change reflects the navigational demands of powerboat instruction in coastal and tidal environments and brings the NPTS instructor pathway into line with best practice across comparable schemes. This requirement applies to all new instructors and to renewals falling on or after 1st September 2025. Instructors with current valid recognition are unaffected until their next renewal.
Training Centres should ensure candidate information and instructor development planning reflects this change ahead of the effective date. Both Advanced SBSS and Advanced NPTS Instructors may deliver this certificate with packs available on sailing.ie.
