Irish Sailors to Contend Grand Slam Final
The Irish Sailing Performance team will be in action this week for the Sailing Grand Slam Final from Wednesday 17 to Sunday 21 September at Dutch Water Week. Finn Lynch (National YC), Ewan McMahon (Howth YC) and Eve McMahon (Howth YC) will take part in this special final which brings together the ten best sailors from each Olympic class for a season-ending showdown in Almere, The Netherlands.
Lynch has already secured two podium finishes in the ILCA 7 Class of the series, earning Bronze medals in both Palma and Kiel. Currently sitting third overall, he will be aiming to improve on that standing and close the season with another strong result.
Ewan McMahon, who reached his first medal race in Hyères earlier this year, has shown steady progress throughout the season. His recent performance at the European Championships on a challenging course in Marstrand, Sweden, confirmed his place among the world’s best.
Liam Glynn, Irish Sailing coach said, “Both Finn and Ewan are delighted to be invited to this event. It’s a valuable chance to race in ten-boat fleets and compete in front of spectators for the finale. For Finn especially, this competition is an opportunity to finish the season on a high note with a medal.”
ILCA 6 sailor Eve McMahon enters this competition following a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships in August and a gold medal at the recent Grand Slam in Los Angeles. The World Championship bronze medallist will be aiming to finish the year on a high. To be in the medal mix she’ll need to focus on consistency and a reduction in the technical fouls she suffered earlier in the season.
Racing gets underway today at Marina Muiderzand and will run through to Friday, before moving to the Weerwater for the final rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Dutch Water Week is one of the world’s largest watersports festivals, now part of the five-event Sailing Grand Slam circuit which includes four elite European regattas and one in the future Olympic sailing venue of Los Angeles 2028.
