Irish Sailing has launched a new Safeguarding Community of Practice for Club Children’s Officers (CCOs), creating a dedicated space for volunteers to connect, share experiences and support one another in delivering safeguarding across clubs and training centres.
The initiative has been developed in response to ongoing conversations with CCOs across the country, many of whom highlighted the importance of having a supportive environment where practical safeguarding challenges can be discussed openly and constructively.
Rather than focusing on formal presentations or compliance exercises, the Community of Practice is designed to encourage real-world discussion around safeguarding in busy, volunteer-led environments. Sessions will provide opportunities for participants to share experiences, compare approaches and learn from one another in a trusted and collaborative setting.
Speaking about the initiative, Irish Sailing National Children’s Officer Luke Murphy said:
“Irish Sailing isn’t always the expert in what works on the ground, there is an enormous amount of experience across our membership and this is our opportunity to learn from each other and strengthen safeguarding in a way that reflects real club life.”
The sessions will focus on the practical application of safeguarding principles, including managing difficult conversations, navigating uncertain situations and building confidence in decision-making. The goal is to ensure that Club Children’s Officers feel supported in their roles and connected to a wider safeguarding network within the sailing community.
Irish Sailing is encouraging all Club Children’s Officers to become involved. Those interested in joining the Safeguarding Community of Practice can contact Luke Murphy at Irish Sailing for further information.
