Irish sailing team Headcase has been nominated for Team of the Year at the prestigious World Sailing Awards, which will take place in Dun Laoghaire on 5 November.
The nomination caps off a phenomenal season for the amateur crew, who captured National, European, and World Championship titles in 2025, a remarkable achievement that has placed them among the elite in international sailing.
Fresh from their latest victory at the Irish Sailing Keelboat Champions’ Cup last weekend, the Headcase crew represents clubs from across Ireland. The team includes skipper Cillian Dickson of Lough Ree Yacht Club, Ryan Glynn of Ballyholme Yacht Club, Sam O’Byrne of Howth Yacht Club, and Louis Molloy and Marcus Ryan, both of Mayo Sailing Club.
Speaking on the nomination, skipper Cillian Dickson said. “This is just an incredible position to be in. We can’t believe it. We’ve had an unbelievable year, Europeans, Worlds, and now this. It’s the stuff of dreams, really.”
The Headcase story is one of true grassroots success. The team, made up entirely of amateur sailors, has been competing together for six years with the same crew and configuration, a testament to their commitment and camaraderie. Each member owns an equal share of the boat, underscoring their collective spirit and passion sailing.
With three European Championships already under their belts and eyes now set on another World Championship campaign in 2026, Headcase continues to embody the very best of Irish sailing.
The J/24 is the most popular keelboat in the world, with some 5,500 boats sailing worldwide, and although it was designed in 1977, still attracts large fleets internationally. It is known as one of the most accessible sailboats due to its size and relatively low cost. Teams of four to six people usually sail them.
