SPORTS CAPITAL GRANTS

OVER €1.5 MILLION FOR SAILING CLUBS AND AFFILIATES UNDER THE EQUIPMENT GRANT SCHEME

Just over €1.5 million has been allocated to the sport of sailing as part of the €26 million equipment grants under the latest round of the Sports Capital & Equipment Programme (SCEP).

The ‘Sports Capital and Equipment Programme’ is administered by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. It is the government’s primary vehicle for providing support to sports clubs and communities “to develop sustainable sports infrastructure and increase active participation in sport around the country”. The fund was announced last week by Minster for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, TD and Minister for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, Thomas Byrne, TD.

Applications under the 2023 round of the programme closed on September 8th last, with 3,210 applications received, and a total of over €350 million sought by all applicants.

“This is the highest number of applications ever received which shows the continued importance and popularity of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme,” said Minister Catherine Martin. “I want to thank all of the volunteers throughout the country who submitted applications on behalf of their clubs and communities.”

Many Irish sailing clubs who applied for grants under the Government’s sports capital and equipment programme have been successful in securing funding, with a total of 28 clubs and Irish Sailing affiliates and four scouting groups receiving money for sailing and support equipment under the scheme.

Over 900 sports groups nationally were successful in their applications for various types of equipment which will be of practical benefit to multiple sports organisations, their members, and athletes across Ireland.

All allocations are in response to equipment only applications for various types of sporting equipment. Further allocations under the Sports Capital Grant & Equipment Programme, including for capital works, will be announced later this year.

Meanwhile, the sums of money awarded to individual sailing clubs in 11 counties – see full list below – varies significantly from club to club; from €10,165 to €120,526.
