In Support of Ukraine

Update: 22 June 2022

Update: 14 March 2022

On Friday 11 March, Irish Sailing received a letter from Minister of State for Sport, Jack Chambers, outlining a range of sporting sanctions against Russia and Belarus and asking national governing bodies to impliment practical measures to support Ukraine. These include the following principles:

  • Russia and Belarus should not be permitted to host, bid for, or be awarded any international sporting events.
  • Individual athletes selected by Russia and Belarus, administrators and teams representing the Russian or Belarusian state should be banned from competing in other countries, including those representing bodies, cities or brands that are effectively representing Russia or Belarus, such as major football clubs.
  • Wherever possible, appropriate actions should be taken to limit sponsorship and other financial support from entities with links to the Russian or Belarusian states.

Irish Sailing joins World Sailing in strongly condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the terrible violence that has ensued, and call for an immediate end to all hostilities.

Our sports can be a force for good, inspire many, and bring people together from around the world. Both on and off the water, we are united by the values of equality, inclusion, respect and fairness.

Irish Sailing has joined World Sailing in taking the decision to suspend the participation of Russian or Belarusian athletes and officials, in our events and competitions.

Irish Sailing will continue to monitor the situation and update these actions in line with World Sailing.
