Get to know Enoshima

  1. Sailing at the Olympics takes place in Enoshima, about 50 kilometres south of Tokyo. Enoshima is located in the northeast corner of Sagami Bay - take a look in google maps here.
  2. The venue was built for the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games and was Japan's first ever harbour capable of hosting watersport competitions
  3. Sagami Bay can throw up a wide range of weather and sailing conditions. Around this time of year typical weather can be a light southwesterly that can build from 6-14 knots as the sea breeze builds in the afternoon. But ! things can vary a lot as the bay opens directly onto the Pacific Ocean. Essentially the bay can see very mixed weather conditions with up to 20-30 knots and squalls
  4. In late summer, typhoons are a feature of Enoshima. According to some experts, typhoons that happen even 100kms away can still affect the bay as the swells can create waves up to 2.5m/8ft.
  5. Finally – the sailors will have to deal with hot, very humid weather conditions. The temperature is forecast to average between 26.3 – 27.4 C in July, with humidity at around 77%
