BOAT SAFETY THIS SEASON

As the boating season approaches, preparation remains one of the most important steps in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. The sea can be unpredictable, and complacency or forgetfulness can quickly lead to unnecessary risks. Taking the time to prepare both your vessel and your crew can make all the difference.

Before launching into the season, boaters are encouraged to refresh their knowledge and skills by completing relevant training courses. Resources such as those available through Irish Sailing and Royal Yachting Association offer valuable opportunities to build confidence and improve seamanship.

A thorough pre-season inspection of your boat and equipment is essential. This should include checking and servicing the hull, engine, rigging and steering systems, as well as ensuring safety equipment such as lifejackets, liferafts, flares and fire extinguishers are in good working order. Communication devices, including VHF radios and mobile phones, should also be tested.

Before heading out on the water, simple checks can help prevent problems. Plan your passage, check tides and weather forecasts, confirm fuel levels, inspect bilge pumps and engine fluids, and ensure navigation systems are functioning correctly. Let someone ashore know your plans and expected return time.

Crew safety is equally important. Make sure everyone is wearing appropriate clothing and understands the passage plan and onboard safety procedures.

By staying proactive and maintaining good habits throughout the season, boaters can reduce risks and focus on enjoying their time on the water. Preparation, vigilance and clear communication remain the foundations of safe boating.
